LAP Newsletter

December 2024

Dear fellow PhD Candidates,

The last 2024 edition of our newsletter is a good time to look back on everything we have achieved together this past year, but also forward to what our plans are for 2025. In the past year, as the LAP Board, we started to focus more on Recognition and Rewards, but also on sustainability. We started our Social Safety campaign and became involved in faculty and university wide initiatives, such as Academia in Motion. As a PhD community, we have also seen important regulation changes in regards to the Guidance Committee, lay man talk, and mandatory courses. Keep reading to find our more about our plans for next year!

Happy holidays and see you at the LAP Christmas Drinks! 🎅✨ Just so you know, the Best Christmas Outfit Award is up for grabs at LAP Christmas Drinks 2024. A jolly surprise package is awaiting the winner—who will wear it best? 🎄🎁

Best wishes,
The LAP Board

PhD Representation - LAP Plans for 2025
We have already met with the new Dean, Marlies Reinders. We left the meeting with a positive impression of her approach and vision for the future of the LUMC PhD community. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration between LAP and the Dean as we work together to enhance the PhD experience at LUMC. We addressed current topics related to PhD candidates' representation, including guidance committee guidelines, PhD thesis guidelines, and PhD duration. We also talked about how to further support social and psychological safety, as well as Recognition and Rewards for PhD candidates. We will keep you updated in regards to "Meet the Dean" and Open/Closed sessions that we plan on organizing.

Furthermore, we plan to extend our "Social Safety Campaign" with a bi-monthly prize for those who really help the well-being and social safety of PhD Candidates at LUMC! We will keep you updated in regards to this initiative, but you can already start thinking about who you will nominate. Maybe a colleague? A supervisor? A fellow lab member? A non-academic staff member? We look forward to hearing from you in 2025!

Open Door Session follow-up (followed by drinks)
20.01, 4pm-6pm @ Lecture Hall 6/Burumazaal
It has been one year since our last Open Door Session. Curious to know where we are now, one year later? We will be joined by Bob Siegerink (Graduate Schoool) and Marlies Reinders (Dean).

After the session drinks will be offered by the LUMC! A nice opportunity to further discuss the future of the LUMC PhD community. Let us know if you will join by filling in this form!

Update on Mandatory Courses
The LUMC Graduate School changed the mandatory courses requirements so that the courses followed will be a better fit with the wishes and interests of most PhD candidates. Read more on the update. Do not forget that, unless you already followed the introductory meeting from Leiden University, you also need to follow the Inform & Connect program. You can sign up for it here. This program is complementary to the e-learning offered by LUMC.
